Lake Sidi Bourghaba

Attraction An attractive lake, supports amongst others Marble Duck, Crested Coot and Marsh Owl. The lake is also a stop over for migrating birds, e.g. Osprey and Marsh Harrier (okt 2000).

Getting There There is no public transport directly to the lake. You can take a cab (grand taxi) from Kenitra, but chances on anybody sharing the taxi with you are slim. If you have your own transportation, take the road out of Kenitra following the signs "Mehdya". About six km from Kenitra, turn left where the sign says "Rabat 33". The North end of the lake will become visable on your left.

Strategy The main part of the lake can be viewed from a track which runs close to the lake through eucalyptus forest. Look at the reeds on the far side. The place is popular with locals on weekends. They park their cars under the eucalyptus trees and have a picknick.

In the evening, a good spot is the bridge at the northern part of the lake. From here you can see Marsh owls fly down from the hills. We also witnessed an impressive number of Little egret returning to their nests in the trees on the western side of the lake.

If the heat gets to you during the daytime you can have a swim in the Ocean at the nearby Mehdiya Beach. Noon isn't the best time to see the birds anyway.

During our trip in oktober 2000, there were plans of turning the dried up part of the lake in the south into a ... campside.
